In areas like Valencia, where there is a range of economic circumstances, a sustained commitment to supporting those who are struggling and providing resources for those in need is crucial. Meanwhile, in communities with a strong military presence, such as Temecula and San Diego, prioritizing the needs of veterans and their families is paramount.
A Year-Round Commitment to Impact
While charitable giving often peaks during the holiday season, it’s important to recognize communities have needs year-round and may require assistance during the less visible months.
“During the holiday season, many businesses want to help, but there's only two months where main holidays happen and there's another 10 where life keeps going,” said Samantha Morrow, Director of Marketing at Hello Mazda in San Diego, Temecula and Valencia. “So, we try to do a lot of events outside of those holidays, just because that's when real life is going on and many people might not get support from other people and charities."
Another example of this commitment is "Little Heroes Day" for pediatric cancer patients. Understanding children with cancer often have compromised immune systems, making it difficult to participate in public activities, the team at Hello Mazda rented out an entire go-kart amusement center.
The children and their families could enjoy a day of fun and freedom, running and playing without the usual restrictions. At this event, the children could simply “be kids,” a feeling that shouldn’t be exclusive to the holiday season.
Providing Resources for Success
Addressing the financial burden back-to-school shopping may place on families is another critical area of focus. To ensure students have the tools they need to succeed, local schools often rely on support from the community to provide essential supplies at the beginning of each school year.
These efforts go beyond simple donations to making sure the items students receive contain precisely what they need, from basic supplies to specialized items.
"We let the school districts give us a list of the supplies that the kids need for the year, so we go based off that, tailored for each school district's needs," Morrow explained. "We put in everything they ask for – everything their students need to start the school year."
A Community-Driven Approach
Perhaps the most impactful approach to community support is one that empowers individuals to champion the causes they believe in. By fostering a culture of giving and encouraging participation in meaningful initiatives, a stronger connection to the community is fostered, creating a lasting positive impact.
This approach is exemplified by Hello Mazda’s commitment to supporting the charitable passions of its employees. Each year, team members are surveyed to identify the causes they care most about and the charitable events they'd like to participate in.
"We ask them what kind of events they would want to do and if there's any charities they’d want to work with," Morrow said, highlighting the importance of individual involvement. "A lot of our younger employees are actually on the boards of some [charitable] foundations, or they volunteer on their own time, so they have these connections, and they want to help plan the events."
By supporting the passions of individuals and empowering them to take action in these charitable initiatives, a ripple effect of positive change is created throughout Southern California's diverse communities.
