After extensive, instrumented testing of more than 400 vehicles, the experts at Car and Driver magazine published their list of the best plug-in hybrid 3-row SUVs.

The testing comprised of roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value and driving dynamics. The 2025 CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid was ranked at number one, beating out similar offerings from Volvo and Lexus.
According to their editors, the Mazda CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid “retains all the desirable qualities of the gasoline version while returning quicker acceleration.” They also praised the up-to-26-mile EV-only range, its “class-above interior design and materials,” and “impressively agile handling for a three-row SUV.”
In addition to being included on this list, the 2025 CX-90 PHEV is also ranked highly in Car and Driver magazine’s “Best Hybrid Mid-Size SUVs” and the “Longest-Range Plug-In Hybrids We’ve Tested.” With so many of these PHEV models becoming available, we’re proud that the CX-90 PHEV is standing out from the crowd.
