Made in Hiroshima

For centuries, Mazda’s hometown of Hiroshima has been a center for takumi, or craftsmen, where expertise is passed from generation to generation to produce talented artisans. At Mazda, we proudly keep this tradition alive with expert takumi as vital members of our production family.

Crafting an Icon

Dual Facilities

Ujina and Hofu. Engines and transmissions. Mazda’s two principal manufacturing facilities run on the spirit of Hiroshima itself. It’s one of unwavering strength and ceaseless dedication to see the job done right. Engines are assembled by hand at Ujina because the level of quality demanded by Mazda can only be achieved by combining a human touch with technological excellence. At Hofu, every transmission is cast by a group of engineers who fill molds (which are also made in-house) with molten aluminum at temperatures exceeding 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. The finished product is then proudly stamped with the Mazda emblem, a guarantee of quality and unending driving enjoyment.

HUMAN TOUCH

Modern computers are incredible design tools, but to us, they can only do so much. Again, Mazda’s manufacturing ethos dictates a distinctly humanistic approach. For example, Mazda craftsmen deftly process sheet metal by hand, correcting nearly imperceptible welding distortions with an astonishing precision of less than a hundredth of a millimeter. “Sheet metal is a living, breathing thing. It may live or die depending on our skills.” - Kaoru Saito, Mazda Master Craftsman

Painting a Masterpiece

It takes a special type of paint to be a worthy complement to our KODO design philosophy. First came Soul Red Metallic. Now comes Machine Gray Metallic. First made available on the 2016 Mazda CX-9, Machine Gray Metallic quite literally gives the striking Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Launch Edition an extra layer of mystique. With strong contrast between light and shadow and a sleek, high-density finish, it gives the impression that the vehicle’s body has been sculpted from a solid block of steel.

Driver Focused

Each and every car we produce is made for drivers, by drivers. And design is the language we use to communicate that. Because your emotional response to a car is just as important as their mechanical response to you. And nowhere is this more evident than in the MX-5 RF Launch Edition. Congratulations on your purchase.
